Mak Yong preview at Lot 10

Posted in Dance, Drama, Musical Theatre, Traditional Theatre on June 29th, 2009

As most of you know, The Actors Studio will soon be opened at Lot 10 in September. Recently, The Actors Studio Teater Rakyat produce Mak Yong “Titis Sakti”. A traditional Mak Yong performance with a story line adapted from William Shakespeare’s MidSummer Nights Dream. We manage to organize a preview at the concourse area of Lot 10 a week before we open for the show. The response was really good as we had the locals and tourist enquiring about the show ad about Mak Yong itself.

Here are some of the pictures taken during the preview. Enjoy!

What happens when you take a classic written by one of the greatest English playwrights ever and re-tell it through an 800-year-old Asian art form? You’ll have the chance to witness this intriguing fusion soon…

We will be bringing to you a traditional Mak Yong performance inspired by Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Adapted by two exponents of this traditional Malay art form Norzizi Zulkifli & Nan Megat, and directed by Norzizi herself, this upcoming production stays true to the original presentation style of Mak Yong which is fuses together music, dance and drama. The veteran cast, starring Rosdeen Suboh, Asrulfaizal, Zamzuriah Zahari & Tisha Zarina Zainal, will be backed by a music ensemble led by Kamrulbahri Hussin.

This light romance comedy follows three couples faced with three different predicaments that challenges their love…Follow them and allow yourself to be transported to a different world altogether where fairytales and magical powers exist alongside human emotions.

Don’t miss this rare opportunity to experience an age-old art form that was once largely performed as court entertainment in palaces…

THE 100 WORDS PROJECT

Posted in Drama on April 24th, 2009

THE 100 WORDS PROJECT

“THE 100 WORDS PROJECT is a collaborative effort that encapsulates the personal stories of its participants, into one cohesive performance”
~ Mark Beau de Silva, writing workshop facilitator ~

klpac’s all-new T4YP Ensemble for 2009 begins the year with two nights of ensemble workshop performances. Featuring scenes and monologues written in exactly 100-words each, this is certainly a showcase of disciplined creativity. The word count may be arbitrary but the motive is not. Funny or serious? Poetry or drunken nonsense? We’ve got the lot, we suspect!

klpac’s Theatre for Young People (T4YP) programme is back after a hugely successful first season last year…

And this new lot is not wasting any time at all! Having survived the gruelling auditions (we had to make sure they had potential!), all sixteen T4YP members are diving head on into their first project! This year’s take on the THE 100 WORDS PROJECT will be completely different. With the help of director Chris Ling and writing workshop facilitator Mark Beau de Silva, they’ve put together a show based on their own personal stories.

Be the first to see the T4YP 2009 Ensemble in action - their little experimental piece is slightly twisted and pretty absurd but anything goes with this crazy lot…

Look out for more T4YP performances @ klpac!
