The Academy
The Actors Studio, since the early nineties, has always focussed on training and nurturing of the young. Our Artistic director’s trained eye made it possible for the push of training from the tender year of 3 to however old you are.
Our very first class in ‘92 had lumineries such as Tiara Jacquelina Eu, Patrick Teoh, Leslie Dawson, Ramli Hassan, Jeffery Nicholson and Fawziah Nawi and Faridah Merican, to name a few.
After many years of moving from place to place, The Actors Studio finally found our home in Plaza Putra in 1995.
THE ACTORS STUDIO expanded in March 1998 by converting Lot 2 of Plaza Putra into The Actors Studio Academy which serves as an institute for the teaching of performing arts. The Academy space consists of one large wooden floored mirrored studio (approx. 1300 square feet) and three smaller wooden floored studios (approx. 300 square feet).
The Actors Studio Academy provides enthusiasts with rehearsal space. More importantly, it is a centre for learning. Several succesful workshops by Malaysian and foreign experts have been held here. Some of the more popular classes are the Children’s Theatre Programme for kids from 3 - 12, taken by teachers Jerrica Lai and later joined by Nelly Ng, Chris Ng, Pauline Furlong, Lorna Tee and Nala. Contemporary Dance taken by Judimar Monfils, while Joe Hasham’s ‘Acting for beginners’’Intermediate and ‘Advanced’ and ‘Internalization and The Actor’ remain favourites.
The Academy however provides courses for the general public which range from Gamelan Music, Introduction to Musical Theatre, Creative Writing,Theatre for the Young, and traditional Indian and Chinese dance. Amongst our list of cikgus are some of the most influental theatre personalities Malaysia has to offer.
After the June 2003 floods, The Actors Studio Academy programmes were once again held at various venues. Thanks to Five Arts Centre, Min Consult, Larry Gan and MK Land Berhad for assisting us in having our classes at their different premises. In 2004, we have found a temporary home for our programmes at Plaza Damas, Taman Sri Hartamas.
Faridah always believes that when one door closes, another will surely open.
Now The Actors Studio Academy, led by Nala occupies the 9 studio spaces at KLPac (The Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre or PentasSeni KL)
Our teachers, students and our Gamelan set has finally found a home.
The Academy is also proud of its CORe (Community Out Reach) Programmes. As one of our objective is to develop public participation in all aspects of performing arts regardless of race, class or creed; The Academy since its Plaza Putra days has been working with children with special needs, shelter homes, schools, the disabled and also the deaf.
We have brought the world of performing arts closer to The Spastic Centre, Jalan Barat; Shelter Home, PJ; Kiwanis Club of TTDI; Rumah Kanak-Kanak Angel, Taman OUG; Sek. Men. Convent Sentul; Pusat Majudiri Y for the Deaf; to name a few.
Our biggest challenge yet is the Taihen in Malaysia project which is a 3-year colaboration with Japan Foundation KL. The theatre performance by the physically disabled which will be in April 2007 not only introduces such form of theatre to Malaysian audience but is empowers the physically disabled person to be independent artists.
