The Academy
Since the early 90s, The Actors Studio focused strongly on training and nurturing the young.
The very first class in ‘92 comprised luminaries such as Tiara Jacquelina Eu, Patrick Teoh, Leslie Dawson, Ramli Hassan, Jeffery Nicholson and Fawziah Nawi and Faridah Merican, to name a few. After years of moving from place to place, The Actors Studio finally found a home in Plaza Putra in 1995.
In March 1998, Lot 2 of Plaza Putra was converted into The Actors Studio Academy and it housed one large wooden-floored studio with mirrors (approx. 1300 square feet) and three smaller studios (approx. 300 square feet).
It became a centre for learning. Countless successful workshops and courses by Malaysian and foreign experts have been held there. Popular classes included the Children’s Theatre Programme for kids from 3 – 12 taught by Jerrica Lai (and later on by Nelly Ng, Chris Ng, Pauline Furlong, Lorna Tee and Nala Nantha) as well as Contemporary Dance taught by Judimar Hernandez. Joe Hasham’s Acting classes remained as all-time favourites.
After the 2003 flood, the courses were held at various venues around town. Thanks to Five Arts Centre, Min Consult, Larry Gan and MK Land Berhad for allowing our classes to continue at your premises. In 2004, a temporary home was found at Plaza Damas, Sri Hartamas.
Today, the Academy is permanently based at The Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre (klpac).
Besides running courses, the Academy also runs a crucial Community OutReach Programme to bring the performing arts to the underprivileged and unfortunate including children with special needs, shelter homes and the disabled. This is a continuation of its efforts since the Plaza Putra days.
Some of the organisations that The Academy has worked with include The Spastic Centre, Shelter Home PJ, Kiwanis Club of TTDI, Rumah Kanak-Kanak Angel Taman OUG, Sek. Men. Convent Sentul and Pusat Majudiri for the Deaf.
