Mak Yong preview at Lot 10

Posted in Dance, Drama, Musical Theatre, Traditional Theatre on June 29th, 2009

As most of you know, The Actors Studio will soon be opened at Lot 10 in September. Recently, The Actors Studio Teater Rakyat produce Mak Yong “Titis Sakti”. A traditional Mak Yong performance with a story line adapted from William Shakespeare’s MidSummer Nights Dream. We manage to organize a preview at the concourse area of Lot 10 a week before we open for the show. The response was really good as we had the locals and tourist enquiring about the show ad about Mak Yong itself.

Here are some of the pictures taken during the preview. Enjoy!

What happens when you take a classic written by one of the greatest English playwrights ever and re-tell it through an 800-year-old Asian art form? You’ll have the chance to witness this intriguing fusion soon…

We will be bringing to you a traditional Mak Yong performance inspired by Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Adapted by two exponents of this traditional Malay art form Norzizi Zulkifli & Nan Megat, and directed by Norzizi herself, this upcoming production stays true to the original presentation style of Mak Yong which is fuses together music, dance and drama. The veteran cast, starring Rosdeen Suboh, Asrulfaizal, Zamzuriah Zahari & Tisha Zarina Zainal, will be backed by a music ensemble led by Kamrulbahri Hussin.

This light romance comedy follows three couples faced with three different predicaments that challenges their love…Follow them and allow yourself to be transported to a different world altogether where fairytales and magical powers exist alongside human emotions.

Don’t miss this rare opportunity to experience an age-old art form that was once largely performed as court entertainment in palaces…

THE 100 WORDS PROJECT

Posted in Drama on April 24th, 2009

THE 100 WORDS PROJECT

“THE 100 WORDS PROJECT is a collaborative effort that encapsulates the personal stories of its participants, into one cohesive performance”
~ Mark Beau de Silva, writing workshop facilitator ~

klpac’s all-new T4YP Ensemble for 2009 begins the year with two nights of ensemble workshop performances. Featuring scenes and monologues written in exactly 100-words each, this is certainly a showcase of disciplined creativity. The word count may be arbitrary but the motive is not. Funny or serious? Poetry or drunken nonsense? We’ve got the lot, we suspect!

 t4yp_100words_09.jpg

klpac’s Theatre for Young People (T4YP) programme is back after a hugely successful first season last year…

And this new lot is not wasting any time at all! Having survived the gruelling auditions (we had to make sure they had potential!), all sixteen T4YP members are diving head on into their first project! This year’s take on the THE 100 WORDS PROJECT will be completely different. With the help of director Chris Ling and writing workshop facilitator Mark Beau de Silva, they’ve put together a show based on their own personal stories.

Be the first to see the T4YP 2009 Ensemble in action - their little experimental piece is slightly twisted and pretty absurd but anything goes with this crazy lot…

Look out for more T4YP performances @ klpac!

Visit www.t4yp.wordpress.com to watch last year’s performance.

Casting Call

Posted in News on April 13th, 2009

I am a Casting Director from Singapore and am doing some ground work for an upcoming international project.

I am looking for talents based in Malaysia as a portion of the film might be shot in Malaysia if they manage to find the right locations.

Do contact me at Casting@artiste-e.com if you are interested.

Box Office Supervisor Vacancy

Posted in News on April 1st, 2009

The Actors Studio is looking for a box office supervisor. “What’s that?” you may ask. The person must have a friendly personality both in person and on the phone. Able to work under pressure, when all the phones are ringing at one time and there’s an irate customer in front of you wanting your undivided attention too! That’s just one small senario.
The box office supervisor is entrusted with handling money - both the plastic type and cash. Working hours is 10am - 6.30p.m. Extended hours are required on show days.
It could be a fun job for the right person. Fluency in English, Chinese, BM would be perfect.

If interested, please email to faridah@klpac.org

The theatre on the top floor

Posted in News on March 10th, 2009

Dearest Faridah and Joe

I just read The Star’s article about the last performance at The Actors Studio, Bangsar and am feeling such a pickle of emotions.

The aircon was always too fierce, the technical and box office folks were usually just as chilly, and the prices were higher than anything people had known (even as there was this idea that Malaysian theatre needed to be supported as if cap in hand). But what’s that got to do with anything?

What an upgrade it was! How uplifting and innovative to have a comfortable home! Why can theatre only be ‘legit’ in a field or in a barn? And furthermore, this was not just a precious up-itself space. We (’we’ konon) were in a shopping mall: as ‘one with the people’ as largely-English speaking theatre could get. It was a stunning, daring and accomplished triumph after the underground dungeon that was TAS Dataran (know that I remember this space even more fondly:). The floods were cruel but the loss pulled everyone together in a way that hadn’t been seen since, perhaps, the 1960s.

I feel a bit pissed off that TAS Bangsar isn’t going to be there anymore. My parents loved having a place to drive to that was easy to reach and park and get to from the car (“we’re going to the theatre on the top floor”).

I don’t know the reasons for no TAS in the new BSC, and to be honest, I don’t really care. There is already klpac and the trick might well be to make that place home for an ever wider group of people. (How to develop a theatre in a gated community is of course a challenge and a half:) I like to think that after all this time, you guys should not have to carry the can anymore. You got lots of spring in the step and you aren’t chicken to try anything, but surely you can have an easier time of things. So much money and heart already, how many pricks and pains does it take, and all the while, sticking to your guns (even if those guns might not always be my choice of expression or protection).

My heart goes out to you, dear god, the personal sacrifices! (Yes sure, your eyes wide open so no need to make you martyrs.) Meanwhile, there is still klpac. I hope you feel you done good. The rest is up to everybody bloody else.

with so much love and admiration,
Ann Lee
